Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold Price/ Screen & Camera Review 2021
While other manufacturers were thinking about how to reduce the cost of their folding smartphones, Xiaomi released a model – Mi Mix Fold. Yes, it costs about 215,000 rupees, but many more buyers will be able to afford it.
In addition, the Xiaomi Mix Fold is the company’s debut device with its own Surge C1 image processor. Although it is only used to improve the quality of shooting, the chipset serves as proof that Xiaomi continues to develop its own technology directions.
Design and construction
The Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold smartphone folds inward like a book, hiding a large 8-inch screen that looks like a tablet. Outside, we have an additional 6.5-inch display with an unusually tall / narrow 27: 9 aspect ratio. If you are familiar with foldable phones, it would be wrong to say the Xiaomi Fold has the same design as the Samsung Fold.
Xiaomi is so confident in the design of its hinge that they even streamed it live on YouTube showing how the smartphone continuously folds and unfolds over several days. But, the Xiaomi hinge seems too weak to me. Don’t get me wrong, everything remains locked when folded, but when the device is in the process of opening or folding, the hinge does not feel as strong as the hinges of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 or Huawei Mate X2 .
Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold with Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Huawei Mate X2
Like all folding competitors, the Mi Mix Fold is heavy and thick at 317g and 17.2mm (folded). This is not unusual for me, but some may complain about it. I would say that the weight is roughly equivalent to using a large iPhone in a massive, durable case. It is also worth adding that the foldable smartphones of Samsung and Huawei are slightly lighter and thinner than Xiaomi, but not enough to really feel the difference.
Two bright displays
The main feature of the Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold is the 8.01-inch fold-out OLED display. Its resolution is 2480 × 1860 pixels, with an aspect ratio of 4: 3. Thus, the MIX Fold is the largest folding smartphone today. It can even rival tablets.
The internal screen supports 1 billion colors and HDR10 + technology, and the maximum brightness reaches 900 nits. Unfortunately, the refresh rate of the panel does not exceed 60 Hz.
The second external screen with a diagonal of 6.52 inches is an AMOLED panel with a resolution of 2520 × 840 pixels. The display supports a refresh rate of 90 Hz and a polling rate of the touch layer of 180 Hz. The maximum brightness here can also go up to 900 nits.
Mi Mix Fold Cameras
The Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold uses a set of three main cameras on the back. Home – Samsung HM2 with a resolution of 108 MP, a telephoto macro lens with 8 MP and a 13 MP ultra wide-angle sensor. It is also worth noting that this is the first smartphone with Xiaomi’s Surge C1 image processor.
Unfortunately, the quality of the Mix Fold cameras is not very impressive. For example, we get the HM2 sensor even in the relatively inexpensive Redmi Note 9 Pro. Probably the point is that the manufacturing process of the Xiaomi folding smartphone was very long, so some of the components are a little outdated.
However, a tele-macro lens does its job perfectly. With this lens, you can shoot both distant and very close objects, all thanks to a special liquid lens.
A liquid lens essentially has an outer coating that changes shape when exposed to an electric current, allowing the sensor to quickly change its focal length. Therefore, the Mix Fold is capable of working as both a 3x telephoto lens and a macro lens.
The Xiaomi Mix Fold runs MIUI 12 on top of Android 10, and for the most part, the software is well adapted to the changing screen sizes.
The Xiaomi user interface offers a really comfortable multitasking experience. For example, it is possible to open applications in split screen mode or in a floating window, which is comfortable on a large display.
The Mi Mix Fold software seems familiar to me from other foldable phones I’ve used. Instagram Stories will have a cropped top and bottom if you view them on a large internal screen. Therefore, applications usually need to be restarted and resized if you switch between small and large screens.
Mi Mix Fold is the most expensive Xiaomi smartphone right now, it is not surprising that the hardware in it is also the most powerful. We get a Snapdragon 888 5G processor, 12/16 GB LPDDR5 RAM and 256/512 GB UFS 3.1 internal storage.
In performance tests, this clamshell shows excellent results. Geekbench 5 produced 1126 points in single-core and 3441 in multi-core. In GFXBench Manhattan 3.0 1080p (offscreen), the tested MIX Fold reached 158 fps. These are excellent performance!
The Xiaomi Mi Mix Fold smartphone is interesting not only for its screens, but also for its stereo speakers. There are four of them here, and they are located on the sides of the main display. The sound has been tuned by Harman / Kardon and is 40% louder than the Mi 10 Pro.
