OPPO A73 mid-range smartphone review, Price in Pakistan

OPPO A73 is an interesting proposition in the mid-range smartphone category due to its AMOLED screen. It also offers us an interesting finish, reminiscent of dark blue leather.

Looking at the specs of the A73, there is no shortage of NFC or other important options, with 30W fast charging being a particular advantage? What are the disadvantages of OPPO A73 and should you choose it? Find out from my review.

Design and appearance

OPPO has ditched the annoying gradient color versions of the A73. Both OPPO A73 variants are very stylish and differ significantly not only in color, but also in finish. I got the navy blue version with a skin-like texture. Against a dark blue background, the silver mirror OPPO logo stands out, as well as the silver frame of the four lenses of the main camera module. It’s hard to find another smartphone at this price point that looks the same.

The matte finish hides prints well, it does not need to be constantly wiped clean. In the second version, white, instead of a texture imitating leather, symbols are engraved, which is also not a common solution among phone manufacturers. The body of the A73 is almost completely flat – there are no rounded edges or protrusions, even the frame has a flat surface.

In hand, the smartphone looks thin and light when its dimensions are 159.8 x 72.9 x 7.5 mm and weighs 163 grams. This is a fairly light device considering the 6.44-inch screen size. At the bottom of the device is a USB-C connector, 3.5 mm for headphones and a monaural speaker, which provides good sound quality in speakerphone mode.

The housing is not sealed and does not have any protection against water or dust. The pluses include a tray with three separate slots – two for Nano-SIM cards, and the third for a microSD memory card.

Smartphone display

OPPO A73 6.44-inch screen, FHD + resolution (2400 × 1080 pixels with 408 PPI). The display is made using AMOLED technology, which is not typical for this price category. The quality of the panel is one of the main elements that immediately catches the eye. It is bright, contrasty, with very good viewing angles. The manufacturer claims a maximum brightness of 600 nits with an average of 430 nits. The screen is covered with Gorilla Glass 3 protective glass, and the image refresh rate is 60 Hz. In the screen settings, you can choose a dark mode, which is comfortable for the eyes and reduces the amount of blue light, adjusting the color temperature, or two color modes: bright or gentle. The display is, in my opinion, one of the main advantages of the A73 from OPPO.

OPPO A73 cameras

The OPPO A73 has 4 cameras on the back and one on the front. Among them there are as many as two auxiliary lenses for measuring depth with a monochrome matrix and identical parameters.

The list of shooting modes includes: Photo, Video, Ultra Night, Portrait, Sticker, Google Camera, Expert, Panorama, Text Scanner, Secondary HD, Slow Motion and Time Lapse Video. AI (artificial intelligence), filters with live view and HDR can be activated.

You can change the magnification of a frame from 2 to 5 times, but all types of magnification are performed digitally, by cropping a fragment of a photograph obtained from a 16-megapixel sensor. Photo quality in daylight is good, although the camera is demanding on lighting conditions and does not always cope in poor conditions or highly contrasting scenes. However, in many situations the A73 is capable of producing good images from the main lens.

Wide-angle photos, although less detailed and lower resolution, are often useful. The lens allows you to capture a wide frame, which is not possible with digital processing on the primary matrix. This is why I find the wide angle lens to be an important practical addition.

Night photography is too difficult for this OPPO model. Smartphone cameras have problems matching bright light and dark background – either there is no multiple exposure, or it is worse than in expensive models. Even when we don’t have problems with black backgrounds or too bright lighting, the photos come out very blurry and noisy.

The OPPO A73 video only shoots 1080p at 30fps. It can be recorded with both the wide-angle and the main camera, but you cannot switch between them while shooting, it uses digital zoom. The advantage of A73 video capture is effective digital stabilization, no focus, fluidity and sound issues.

However, this isn’t the most detailed Full HD recording I’ve ever seen on a smartphone – it’s a little blurry and quite noisy. I think these are more acceptable disadvantages than the lack of stabilization on smartphones in the same price range.

System and software

OPPO A73 runs on Android 10 OS with updates from November 5, 2020 and ColorOS version 7.2 overlay. Among noteworthy system applications, I can single out: compass, voice recorder, FM radio, WPS Office and Soloop, an application for fast and easy editing of videos consisting of short dynamic frames or cuts to music.

Among the system functions, it is worth mentioning a screenshot triggered by a three-finger gesture, or scrolling the screen, combined into one image – horizontally. There is a setting for emergency SMS messages, an additional safe for personal applications and files, as well as a child mode that blocks paid SMS messages, prevents system modifications, limits the list of active applications and the time of using the phone.

We also have the ability to clone apps, we have a game space to block notifications and manage energy consumption. In general, the OPPO system shell is clear and pleasant to use.

Hardcore Performance

The new OPPO A73 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 662 octa-core processor with a core clock speed of up to 2.3GHz. It is supported by 4/6 GB LPDDR4X RAM and 128 GB UFS 2.1 internal memories for system and user files.

According to Antutu’s results, this OPPO ranked 60th in the ranking. However, when creating the A73, I had to economize on performance in favor of the AMOLED screen, which, in my opinion, was a good decision. During use, the OPPO phone did not cause me problems due to system instability or slow operation.

Security and access

The OPPO A73 smartphone can be unlocked using an in-screen fingerprint scanner, or by reading facial biometrics. I quickly added a fingerprint, and the unlocking itself worked pretty well. But when I tried to scan my face, the A73 insisted that it was not detected, regardless of the type of lighting and whether I took off my glasses. Zooming in and out didn’t help either. On other devices, I have not encountered similar problems.

Maybe this is an isolated case, or the next update will solve this problem – it’s hard for me to say for sure. Communication and connections the communication package of communication modules includes LTE, WiFi ac 2.4 / 5 GHz, Bluetooth 5.0 and NFC.

The set of sensors includes: an accelerometer, a gyroscope, a light sensor, a proximity sensor, a digital compass and an on-screen fingerprint scanner. Localization and navigation is carried out according to the GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO and BDS standards. Many will be pleased with the 3.5 mm audio jack for wired connection of accessories.

Autonomy OPPO A73

The OPPO A73 comes with a 4015mAh battery and a 30W fast charger out of the box. It charges the battery up to 50% in 30 minutes and up to 100% in less than an hour. This is an important advantage of the device, as many manufacturers still believe that 18W is fast charging. Here OPPO has shown its best side.

Outcome OPPO A73 is a decent smartphone that offers a superior design with a unique finish. We also get an AMOLED screen, non-hybrid SIM tray, 3.5mm jack, NFC, modern and easy-to-use software, and truly fast charging.
