Finally, the new Samsung phones are official. The South Korean manufacturer today presented the new Galaxy S20, S20 Plus and S20 Ultra in San Francisco. The new Galaxy phones are called “20” for the simple reason that they will be launched this year. From now on, Samsung wants to continue this pattern with future models. The next Galaxy of the S series will be called S21 in 2021, and so on. Samsung has also introduced a new foldable device – the Galaxy Z Flip .

In Hands-On we took a closer look at what exactly the devices have to offer and whether the new Galaxy S20 Ultra is really “ultra”. First, we give you an overview of the new S20 trio in the table.

Samsung remains no longer cheaper

“Ultra” is the new “plus”: Samsung is no longer opting for a cheaper model with an “e” addition this year, but is going in the other direction. The star among the new models is now the Galaxy S20 Ultra – the strongest, but with an introductory price of 1,349 euros and 1,549 euros, the most expensive cell phone from the S20 trio.

With a diagonal of 6.9 inches, the display is truly “ultra” large. One-handed operation is difficult here, as is transportation in your pocket. You can tell immediately that the S20 Ultra is not a lightweight at 220 grams when you hold it in your hand. However, the processing is flawless. The transitions from the display to the back of the glass are pleasantly rounded. Only the pre-attached protective film scratches something in the hands-on. According to Samsung, this can simply be removed.

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra: Quad camera with 108 megapixels

The rectangular camera module on the back of the S20 Ultra can neither be overlooked nor “felt”. It clearly protrudes from the housing and contains four sensors. Among them is a 108-megapixel main sensor for the first time. In the standard setting, this snaps a 12-megapixel photo because the software combines nine pixels into one. This technique is called “nona binning” and is intended to ensure that the photo is particularly good and bright, especially in dim light. As a result, a pixel with 2.4 µm is significantly larger than a normal pixel (1.8 µm). The advantage: more light can fall on it, which improves the image quality – at least in theory. We could only try this in daylight in hands-on, which looks promising. We are very excited to see what comes out in our twilight test.

Camera Review

If you want, you can switch to 108 megapixels in the camera settings and take ultra-high-resolution photos (with 12,032 x 9,024 pixels). This is particularly useful if the lighting conditions are very good and you want to capture as many details as possible or if you want to print out the motif in oversize. To save storage space and to achieve low-noise results, the standard setting is recommended.

The camera setup also includes a sensor for ultra-wide-angle shots, a time-of-flight sensor for depth-of-field information for portrait shots, and a telephoto sensor that enables an optical quadruple zoom. Since the telephoto sensor is located further inside the housing, a prism directs the light onto it. A tenfold hybrid zoom is possible with digital help; motifs can be enlarged up to 100 times purely digitally. The result is then no longer lossless compared to the optical zoom.

The front camera of the S20 Ultra snaps with 40 megapixels, here too the selfie has an actual resolution of 10 megapixels due to the combination of four pixels. In the first check, it becomes sharp and detailed.

Samsung Galaxy S20, S20 Plus and S20 Ultra: OLED display with 120 Hertz

With the new S20 trio, Samsung has said goodbye to the edge design of its predecessors. All three new models now have a slightly rounded OLED display. The hole for the front camera is smaller compared to the Galaxy S10 Plus (in the test) and sits not in the side, but in the middle.

The displays now optionally offer a refresh rate of 120 Hertz. So far, this has only been used in gaming smartphones such as the Asus ROG Phone II (in the test) or Apple’s iPad Pro (in the test) . This makes the display particularly soft, which is noticeable, for example, when animations or when scrolling on websites. Since a higher refresh rate also consumes noticeably more power, conventional 60 Hertz are activated as standard. The 120 Hertz can also not be activated in the full WQHD-Plus resolution, but only in the standard Full HD-Plus resolution.

Samsung Galaxy S20 (Plus) vs. Galaxy S20 Ultra: Different camera, same features

The camera setup of the two “smaller” Galaxy S20 models consists of a 12-megapixel main sensor, the same ultra-wide-angle sensor that is also installed in the S20 Ultra, and a telephoto sensor for a triple hybrid zoom. Only the Plus model has a sensor for depth of field information.

However, some new features are not only reserved for the Ultra model, they are also on board the S20 and S20 Plus. So all three Galaxy phones can now shoot 8K videos at 24 frames per second. The resolution is 16 times higher than with Full HD videos. But this is only really relevant if users play the videos on an 8K monitor. That being said, there is also the option of taking a 33-megapixel photo from the video that has already been shot.

In addition, there is a new mode in the camera menu called “Single Take”. When triggered once, all lenses take up to 10 seconds. After a processing time of around 15 seconds, the software suggests the best selection. That can be up to 10 photos and 4 videos, even with music. We think: A cool, new feature – and the whole thing works with the front camera.

Samsung Galaxy S20, S20 Plus and S20 Ultra: battery and performance

The necessary performance is ensured in all three new Galaxy S models by the new Exynos 990 processor from Samsung, which clocks at up to 2.73 GHz and is said to offer a higher reading and writing speed compared to its predecessors. The 5G modem is installed separately. The S20 and S20 Plus are available as 4G or 5G versions; the S20 Ultra will only be available as a 5G version in this country.

In the Galaxy S20 Ultra, the processor is supported by extremely generous 12 or 16 GB of RAM. The S20 and S20 Plus are still a proud 8 or 12 GB of RAM. There is also plenty of internal storage space. All models offer 128 GB internally, the Plus and Ultra are also available with 512 GB. If this should somehow become scarce, the storage space can be expanded by 1 TB via a microSD card.

The battery capacity of the Galaxy S20 Ultra is 5,000 mAh – but this will also be necessary with the giant display. The S20 Ultra can theoretically charge up to 45 watts, but the power adapter supplied by Samsung only supports 25 watts. If you want to charge faster, you have to buy the corresponding power supply. Even with the 25-watt power supply, the charging time should be less than one and a half hours.

There is a 4,000 mAh battery in the S20, and the capacity in the S20 Plus is 4,500 mAh. Wireless charging supports all new S20 models, now faster with up to 15 watts. And they can also be used as a Qi charging station – more recently with a slightly larger area.

In A Nutshell

Like the predecessors, the display of the new Galaxy S20 models has an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, the surface of which should now be easier to reach, since it has slid slightly upwards and has also become somewhat larger. When we tried it out for the first time, we noticed no enormous difference, but the sensor reacted at lightning speed. If you prefer to use facial recognition, you don’t have to do without it.

It looks different if you still like to connect headphones with a 3.5mm jack to your mobile phone. The new Galaxys no longer have any space for this, as they only have a USB Type-C connection. Bixby is activated on and off on the new S20 models. There is no longer a separate Bixby button.

The new S20 Galaxys are officially protected against dust and water damage in accordance with IP68 certification.

The Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20 Plus and Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G will be available from March 13, 2020. The smallest model, the Galaxy S20, starts at 899 euros. For more storage space or 5G support, prospective customers pay at least one hundred euros. The smallest version of the S20 Plus costs 999 euros; for the Ultra in the largest version, 1,549 euros will be charged.

By the way: If you pre-order the Galaxy S20 Plus or Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G from February 11th to March 8th, you will also receive the new Galaxy Buds +.
