Review of OnePlus 9 Pro Price, Review, and Specification 2021

OnePlus continues to strengthen its position in the smartphone market. This time, the company came out with two models: OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro. This review will focus on the OnePlus 9 Pro, where a lot of attention is paid to cameras and a display that uses a special technology to reduce power consumption.

Like the past 8T, we get a dual battery with 65W charging in the new model. The main difference between the regular version and the 9 Pro is the cameras. The more expensive device has a separate telephoto lens, 8K video recording, and 4K / 120 fps support.

Unpacking

Inside the familiar red box is the OnePlus 9 Pro smartphone, behind it are some documents, a silicone case, a 65W Warp Charge power adapter, and a regular red USB 2.0 Type-C to Type-C cable.

The silicone case is opaque this year. It’s unclear why OnePlus decides not to add this accessory in some markets and keep it in others.

Two things we can always count on in the OnePlus box are a set of stickers and a letter from company founder Pete Lau encouraging customers to participate in the OnePlus community forums. A SIM eject tool is attached to this letter. Audio accessories included, no. Even an audio adapter.

Design and appearance

As a rule, smartphones from OnePlus have nice, but not too expressive design. The same can be said for the OnePlus 9 Pro. It is very similar to the 8 Pro, although there are changes here too. The case has become narrower and more compact, which is more convenient for use, however, its weight has remained almost unchanged – 197 grams.

Such a sharp rounded screen on the sides, like its predecessor, no longer exists. It is slightly rounded on the sides, but it is almost imperceptible. The power and sound mode keys are on the right, and the volume controls are on the left. They were positioned much lower than the 8 Pro. The bottom side remains unchanged – two speaker grilles, a USB connector and a SIM card slot.

Smartphone display

The OnePlus 9 Pro has a 6.7-inch display with a resolution of 3216 x 1440 pixels. It is a 10-bit AMOLED panel with 120Hz adaptive refresh rate and HDR, HDR10, HDR10 + and HLG support.

The maximum brightness reaches approximately 1150 nits, which is sufficient for any conditions. The standard color profile has rich, vibrant whites. The most accurate profile is sRGB, with an average Delta E of just 0.7 with a maximum deviation of 1.7.

In the 9 Pro, OnePlus uses LTPO technology, which can dynamically change the refresh rate of the screen. If you watch a video at 24 fps, the frequency will change to 24 Hz, and when displaying a normal picture, it will drop to 1 Hz altogether. As soon as you touch the screen, the frequency will immediately increase to 120 Hz.

OnePlus 9 Pro cameras

On the back of the OnePlus 9 Pro is a quad camera system. The main sensor is Sony IMX789 with a resolution of 48 MP and optical stabilization. The new 50MP Sony IMX766 sensor is used as an ultra-wide-angle lens. We also have an 8MP 3.3x telephoto lens with OIS and a 2MP monochrome camera that only helps the main camera when taking black and white shots.

Shooting quality

The main camera of the OnePlus 9 Pro takes good pictures, but I expected more from the collaboration with Hasselblad. There are practically no differences from previous models, the detail of 12-megapixel images is the same as in the 8 Pro. The full 48MP resolution is also not much better, the photos are the same, except for a little less noise and sharpness.

Dynamic range is average, exposure is sometimes lacking, and details in the shadows are lost. But the sensor used in the OnePlus 9 Pro is much better than its predecessors, the IMX789 clearly outperforms the IMX689 in terms of dynamic range and low light quality. The good news is that there is much more you can do in post-processing RAW files than before. Thus, the problem is most likely precisely in the JPEG settings, if you choose RAW and process the photo yourself, their quality will be noticeably higher.

Software

OnePlus’ OxygenOS system skin has changed a lot in recent years. In version 11, the emphasis is on one-handed use. Most of the built-in apps and settings have on-screen elements located at the bottom and middle of the screen to make them easier to reach with your finger.

On first setup, you will be presented with a choice between the default Roboto font and OnePlus Sans. The second is simpler and more modern, but Roboto has better readability. The font can be changed at any time in the settings. The notification bar has six icons for Quick Settings, a brightness slider, and playback controls for videos or music. Below them are the notifications themselves.

Component performance

The OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro are among the first smartphones to feature the new 5nm Snapdragon processor. The Snapdragon 888 has its own built-in X60 5G modem.

This eight-core chipset is 25% faster than last year’s Snapdragon 865. It consists of three clusters. The former contains a single Kryo 680 Prime core clocked at 2.84 GHz and ARM Cortex-X1 architecture. The second cluster consists of three Kryo 680 Gold cores with a frequency of 2.42 GHz and a Cortex-A78 architecture. Finally, the last cluster combines four energy efficient Kryo 680 Silver cores (1.8 GHz).

Outcome

The OnePlus 9 Pro is a decent flagship smartphone that everyone has come to expect from the company. It is convenient, pleasant to use and has all the features that modern users need. However, there is nothing in it that could distinguish the device from the competition.
