Realme GT Neo 2 5G review a powerful smartphone with an elegant design
The Realme GT Neo 2 5G is the successor to the lightweight GT Neo model of the original Realme GT. The smartphone received a bright 6.62-inch screen protected by Gorilla Glass 5, 2 GB of additional RAM and a powerful Snapdragon 870.
The GT Neo 2 5G has a 5000mAh battery and 65W fast charging. The set of cameras is the same, but the improved ISP promises higher quality images. All this is great, but it entails a noticeable price increase. The predecessor had an attractive price / performance ratio. Let’s see if GT Neo 2 5G has retained its competitiveness.

Design and ergonomics
Let’s see how the Realme GT Neo 2 5G differs from the original Neo.
The display is protected by Gorilla Glass 5. The back panel and side frame are still plastic. According to Realme, the body is covered with 7-nanolayers of glass plus a final AG coating. The Neo 2 5G’s case is more resistant to fingerprints. If you look closely, the spots still remain, but they are less noticeable.
Realme GT Neo 2 5G design
The case design in green is complemented by two black stripes. Looks good, but the slogan Dare to Leap is too intrusive. And fingerprints on the glossy black stripe are more visible. The Neo Black and Neo Blue variants have only the medium-sized Realme logo on the back.
The camera module resembles the OnePlus 9, with the two main lenses protruding slightly. Flash – split, two-color. The LEDs are symmetrically located next to the main and ultra-wide-angle cameras, the cameras themselves are offset to the edge relative to the center of the module.
Realme GT Neo 2 5G side
There are two volume buttons on the left side and the power button on the right. The fingerprint reader is built into the screen, but too low. You will have to uncomfortably twist your thumb or hold the phone closer to the bottom edge. On the underside is the main speaker (the second one, as usual, from the top), a USB-C port and a slot for two SIM cards. There is no microSD slot, as well as a 3.5mm jack.
Realme GT Neo 2 5G connectors
In our opinion, the design is better than that of its predecessor. Many issues specific to GT Neo have been resolved. For example, the coating does not leave fingerprints, it is less slippery and cleaner colors, and the display is protected by Gorilla Glass 5. There is still no water protection. The weight has increased to almost 200 g with a thickness of 9 mm. Overall, the Neo 2 5G leaves a good impression. The side frame and curved back are comfortable to grip. The case does not feel slippery, although the coating is smooth.
The Realme GT Neo 2 5G retains a 1080 × 2400 pixel resolution and a selfie camera in the hole in the center of the screen.
Increasing the diagonal from 6.43 to 6.62 inches did not affect the clarity of the image. It’s still a 120Hz AMOLED panel, but it’s now capable of displaying HDR10 + content, which translates to a maximum brightness of 1,300 nits.
Realme GT Neo 2 5G display
Testing has failed to confirm these figures, since peak brightness in HDR video is usually achieved in small areas of the screen. Tests showed 659 nits in auto mode and 498 nits in manual mode. Using Neo 2 5G in bright sunshine will be quite comfortable.
However, the color accuracy is poor. White and gray – with a strong blue tint, regardless of the pre-calibrated modes. The maximum accuracy, in our opinion, is provided by the Gentle mode.
HRR management hasn’t improved either. 120Hz is supported in system menus and many apps, but we expected more from the Auto Switch mod, although we estimated that when fast forwarding a video in full screen mode, the frequency automatically drops to 60Hz. However, 60 fps in game mode does not reveal the full potential of the screen.
GT Neo 2 5G Cameras
The Realme GT Neo 2 5G phone is equipped with a main module with three cameras. The application is standard, there is a Cinema mode for filming video with “professional” settings.
64MP Sony IMX682 lens (1 / 1.73 ”, 0.8um pixels, f / 1.8, no OIS), ultra wide angle lens (8MP, 1 / 4.0 ”, 1.12um, f / 2.3, no autofocus) and a macro camera (2 MP, f / 2.4, no autofocus). Selfie camera parameters – 16 megapixels, f / 2.5, 1 / 3.09 inches, pixels 1.0 micron.
Shooting on Realme GT Neo 2 5G
The frames taken with the main camera with the default settings look average or slightly worse than expected from a camera of this class.
There are enough details, colors are close to natural, noise is noticeable only on uniform backgrounds and in shadows. Sharpness is not good enough, especially around the edges of the frame. Software sharpening turns a frame into a watercolor painting. The consistency of white balance and exposure is not up to par. There is a shift towards the colder end of the spectrum, the exposure is dark. AI mode helps – contrast and color increase, and the correct choice of exposure makes photos more “instagram”.
When shooting with an ultra wide-angle camera, you get soft, noisy photos with a narrow dynamic range and a lack of fine details. There are soft spots in the pictures, probably due to the noise reduction algorithm. However, the correction algorithm does its job perfectly. The color border is practically absent.
Realme GT Neo 2 5G Ultra Wide Angle Camera
Macro photography is difficult due to the lack of autofocus. Macro shots lack detail, colors are anemic, and contrast is low. Although the majority of competitors with the same characteristics, the results are not better.
The main camera of the Realme GT Neo 2 5G performs surprisingly well in low light too.
Realme GT Neo 2 5G night shooting
Of course, there is noise, but the amount of small details is impressive. Dynamic range is normal. Contrast and sharpness are good and colors are close to natural. The good news is the white balance, depending on the light sources.
Portraits and Selfies
The portrait quality of the GT Neo 2 5G is mediocre. They come out a little soft even in good light. Noise is easily noticeable and skin tone is reddish or pale. Determining the boundaries of the object raises no objections.
Realme GT Neo 2 5G Camera Lenses
Selfies are not impressive, details are lower than expected from a 16MP camera. Blurred colors make the subject’s skin look even paler. The bokeh in portrait mode is uneven. The quality deteriorates at the slightest decrease in illumination. Perhaps the reason is the narrow f / 2.5 aperture.
Most of the shooting modes on the Realme GT Neo 2 5G are at 1080p, although the device is capable of 2160p at 60 fps.
Realme GT Neo 2 5G Smartphone Camera
Standard 4K video looks good with little to no noise. Bright colors, good contrast, lots of detail. Sharpness is average for this price range. Some objects are a bit dark, but cloudy weather is to blame. AI mode mainly enhances colors. Shooting at resolutions up to 1080p produces a less clear picture with additional noise. Considering that colors are quite saturated when shooting 4K video, it makes no sense to use AI mode.
Software Realme GT Neo 2 5G
Realme GT Neo 2 5G offers Realme UI 2.0 based on Android 11 and a couple of additional features.
On first boot, you will be greeted with the standard home screen, notification bar, and recent apps menu. Applications can be opened in floating windows or in separate mini-windows. The icons at the bottom of the screen serve as a scroll to scroll through recent applications.
Through the menu, the pop-up keyboard in the application drawer, the animation speed, some gestures with the active display and the so-called icon dropping function, which allows you to temporarily group icons at the bottom of the screen, to select and launch one of the applications, are configured.
Component performance Realme GT Neo 2 5G
Under the body, the Realme GT Neo 2 5G has an eight-core Snapdragon 870 processor and an Adreno 640 GPU graphics accelerator.
The main core Kryo 585 Prime (3.2 GHz) and three Kryo 585 Gold (2.42 GHz) are based on ARM Cortex-A77, four Kryo 585 Silver (1.8 GHz) – Cortex-A55. The Neo 2 5G comes in 8/128 GB, 8/256 GB and 12/256 GB variants. The use of memory cards is not provided, but it is possible to expand the memory using the internal storage, the size of which varies depending on the configuration.
In tests, the GT Neo 2 5G beats its direct competitors and Samsung representatives on the Snapdragon 7xx series. During stress testing – CPU, GPU and mixed – the Snapdragon 870 sits firmly between the Snapdragon 888 and the Dimensity 1200.
Outcome Realme GT Neo 2 5G
Realme GT Neo 2 5G is one of the best price / performance smartphones in its segment, surpassed only by significantly more expensive devices.
The power of the Snapdragon 870 SoC is perfectly matched with the speedy OLED panel. The large battery, fast charging and long battery life make the GT Neo 2 5G a very attractive proposition.
