OPPO Reno 5 Pro 5G review: Oppo Latest Smartphone Price 2021
Two years ago, OPPO introduced the first model in the Reno line, the 10X Zoom. The device was a true flagship, although then the manufacturer switched to the middle segment. Now, with the release of OPPO Reno 5 Pro 5G, the company finally has a smartphone of the level of Samsung, Xiaomi and OnePlus.
We get the same 6.5-inch AMOLED display with rounded sides, but the hardware has been significantly updated. This is one of the first smartphones to be powered by the new MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ processor, thanks to which the performance has improved significantly.
At the back we have a quad camera system with a 64MP main lens. Only 7.6mm thick, OPPO has managed to fit a 4,350mAh battery, 65W fast charging, Wi-Fi 6 and ColorOS 11 based on Android 11 are also available.
Design and appearance
Most of the competitors have a metal and glass body, here OPPO Reno 5 Pro 5G is no different. However, there is one peculiarity – the thickness of the case is only 7.6 mm, this is one of the thinnest smartphones in recent years.
There are two colors to choose from: Astral Blue and Cosmic Black, in my opinion, the former looks especially attractive, the colors gradually move from blue to violet. The backside does not leave fingerprints thanks to the matte finish, which also contributes to comfortable one-handed use. I wish the side frames were the same, but they are glossy and very thin.
In the Reno 5 Pro we get a rounded display on both sides, which is rarely seen in this price segment. Considering the thickness of the 7.6 mm case, there is little room for fingers on the side edges. The bezels around the screen are very small, and the hole for the front camera is in the upper left corner. The power button is on the right and the volume keys are on the left.
The main speaker is located at the bottom, when a little to the left of the USB-C charging connector you will find a SIM card slot. On the top there is an inscription – Designed for Reno.
Display and multimedia
The OPPO Reno 5 Pro screen doesn’t differ much from its counterparts from the Reno 4 line, which is not bad. This is the same 6.5-inch AMOLED display with Full HD + resolution (402 ppi) and a refresh rate of 90 Hz.
Color saturation is all right here, although not everyone will like the rounded sides. OPPO wanted to make the design stand out, but with such a slim body, it might not be the best solution. However, the Reno 5 Pro’s display is ideal for gaming and watching movies. The panel’s brightness reaches 1100 nits, there is support for HDR10 + technology, as well as many settings.
Among them: choosing a color profile, adjusting the intensity of the dark mode, and many others. The always-on mode is a great addition; you can also customize the text style and the displayed elements on the screen.
Reno 5 Pro 5G cameras
On the back of the OPPO Reno 5 Pro 5G is a quad camera system consisting of a 64MP main lens, an 8MP ultra wide-angle lens, a 2MP macro lens and a 2MP monochrome depth sensor. The front camera shoots here at 32MP.
OPPO focuses on video shooting capabilities, so the Reno 5 Pro has improved recording stabilization, as well as algorithms for HDR and AI night shooting. Artificial intelligence powers the Full Dimension Fusion Portrait Video function, which helps you shoot in dark environments. The camera automatically selects saturation and colors to ensure that the exposure of the subject in focus is correct.
The main 64-megapixel camera shoots perfectly in any conditions. The colors may seem oversaturated to some, but for social media, the photos are great. I have no complaints about the 8MP ultra wide-angle sensor, as well as the 32MP front camera.
At the end of last year, OPPO promised that all of the company’s new smartphones will have the latest version of Android when updates become more frequent. This is true for the Reno 5 Pro 5G, with the device running ColorOS 11 on top of Android 11.
In many ways, ColorOS 11 is similar to OxygenOS 11 in a lot of customization options. You will have the ability to control the appearance of icons, fonts and even the style of the always-on mode.
The main problem with last year’s Reno 4 Pro is performance. The Snapdragon 720G processor was not powerful enough, which negated all other benefits. However, in OPPO Reno 5 Pro 5G, this problem disappeared. Here we get the new MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ chipset, with incredible speed.
Dimensity 1000+ is made using a 7-nm process technology, has eight cores: four high-performances Cortex-A77 with a frequency of 2.6 GHz and four energy-efficient Cortex-A55 with a frequency of 2.0 GHz. The ARM Mali-G77 graphics accelerator with nine shader units is responsible for the performance in games.
Should you buy?
However, if you want a slim gadget with an attractive design and powerful hardware, the Reno 5 Pro 5G is the perfect choice. Weighing only 173 grams – one of the thinnest and lightest in the mid-range. The Dimensity 1000+ processor provides incredible performance in everyday tasks and games, and the 4350 mAh battery lasts at least a day, with a charging speed of 30 minutes.
