LG Velvet is a mid-range 5G smartphone, but with a flagship terminal design and character: here are all the details in our review.
LG Velvet is one of the first mid-range smartphones with connectivity on board. On his side, a very interesting aesthetic appeal, but also a strong character, which highlights with always excellent performance. In our review , we tested both him and the new Dual Screen accessory model – the combo is perfect.
LG Velvet: the review
LG Velvet was a pleasure to test it and – during the test – I could not help but think: “Fortunately, LG has not abandoned the development of the Dual Screen accessory”. The version available with Velvet is in fact much more mature than the first and has a design perfectly in line with the aesthetics of the terminal itself. Furthermore, but this is a mere habit, it is practically impossible to go unnoticed when using this device: as soon as you open it, the curiosity of those around is palpable.
Design and display
LG Velvet is sexy. Can this term be used to review the aesthetic appearance of a smartphone? Maybe not, but it gives the idea. It is so accurate in every detail, it has such sinuous shapes, that it is difficult not to think of this terminal as a beauty queen in the world of smartphones. The two cameras out of three flush with the body are the icing on the cake. It should be remembered that, although it looks delicate, this terminal still has IP68 and MIL-STD-810G certifications on board .
The display of this mid-range is a 6.8 ”P-OLED panel with FHD + resolution. Excellent visibility and bright colors, the South Korean giant certainly does not send it to say when it comes to implementing excellent screens on its terminals. There is a small teardrop notch for the selfie camera and – under the display – the good fingerprint reader is implemented .
Hardware and software
Under the body of this device there is the good 5G Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G SoC . The edition I tested has 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage on board. The operating system is Android 10 , under the highly customized LG UX interface. The user experience was equal to that which would have guaranteed me a good top-of-the-range smartphone. LG Velvet has never had any uncertainties, indeed, only once it started to heat up and slow down, but I soon realized that it was the fault of a newly installed application.
Energy autonomy promoted, which guaranteed me – thanks to the 4300 mAh battery – at least one day of use. There is the 25W fast charging cable and the 9W wireless one.
The reception of LG Velvet, which I was able to test only in 4G, is good even where the network is not very reliable. The connectivity suite also completes, in addition to 5G, there is Bluetooth 5.1, WiFi 5 and even NFC .
The audio of this smartphone is stereo and of high quality, thanks to the presence of the LG AI 3D Sound Engine. You will be happy to know that Velvet retains the input for the 3.5mm mini audio jack.
LG Velvet Camera review
On the back of LG Velvet there are three photographic sensors , inserted one under the other and with the secondary cameras “embedded” under the glass. The 48MP main camera takes beautiful photos, even in low light. If you do not use the maximum shooting resolution, you will have the possibility to take advantage of a 2X zoom that is not too different from what a dedicated sensor could offer. The second camera (8MP) takes good wide angles while the third (5MP) takes care of the depth of field.
With Velvet, once again, LG focuses heavily on the video sector , which can be shot with maximum 4K resolution at 30fps. If you are creative, you can have fun with all the possibilities offered by the software dedicated to videos and photos.
The LG Velvet selfie camera is 16MP and does its job very well even if it often exaggerates with HDR in post shooting.
The new “Dual Screen”
I have tried LG Velvet practically always inside its special Dual Screen cover , which – when not needed – can be turned off avoiding energy waste (and I recommend it, because leaving it always on is not good for the battery). The internal panel is a 6.8 ”FullVision OLED with FHD + resolution and a small drop notch. The small external screen is instead a monochrome OLED.
