Display and design: Goodbye water drops

Huawei optically lends a hand to the new P40 Lite. The 6.1-inch display of the P30 Lite has to give way to the 6.4-inch display of the P40 Lite, just as the centrally draped water drop notch from the previous year makes room for the punch hole on the side. The edges of the screen also look a bit narrower on the 2020 Lite model, even if both devices have an almost borderless look. In terms of technology, however, not much changes. The Huawei P40 Lite comes with an LC display that has a resolution of 2,310 x 1,080 pixels at 398 ppi, the P30 Lite meanwhile with an LCD screen and a resolution of 2,312 x 1,080 pixels at 418 ppi – small differences for the Are barely noticeable to the eye.

These are sovereign values for a mid-range smartphone. The decisive factor for the purchase decision is not the technology, but the display size. If you like to carry a smaller smartphone in your pocket, take the P30 Lite, everyone else is more than well served with the Huawei P40 Lite.

Battery and power: the power of youth

Apart from the design, Huawei relies on the tried and tested for the display, but it looks very different in terms of performance. Here, the cell phone manufacturer technically tweaked the performance screw. Inside the P40 Lite, the in-house Kirin 810 SoC clocks at a frequency of up to 2.27 GHz, which is likely to top the benchmark lists in the middle class segment. He is supported by 6 GB of RAM, while 128 GB of internal storage is available for photos, apps and the like.

The Huawei P30 Lite was also a top performer in the middle class at the time, but you can see the age of the phone now. The previous year’s model is equipped with the Kirin 710, which clocks at a maximum of 2.2 GHz and uses 4 GB of RAM. This makes the youngster a tad faster and more fluid among the lite variants. With regard to the internal memory, there are hardly any differences. Huawei also donates 128 GB to the P40 Lite, but is even less generous with regard to external expansion: If the Huawei P30 Lite can be increased by up to 512 GB using a nano card, the P40 Lite is “only” 256 GB. Huawei is upgrading the battery for the new Lite generation: 4,200 mAh (P40 Lite) is compared to 3,340 mAh (P30 Lite).

Photo performance: Quad vs. Triple cam

Huawei also does not save on camera equipment and equips the P40 Lite with a quad camera that has a 48 megapixel RGB, an 8 megapixel ultra wide angle, a 2 megapixel depth and a 2 megapixel Macro sensor. This guarantees high-quality photo performance, at least on paper. In practice, it will be shown how the first-class hardware interacts with the AI software, but we can already give a tip by looking at the specs: The Huawei P40 Lite shoots sovereign photos in every everyday situation and certainly belongs in the middle class segment the better camera phones.

The P30 Lite has to settle for a triple camera that has a 48-megapixel wide-angle sensor, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle sensor and a 2-megapixel bokeh sensor. The equipment has passed the practical test, because it shoots solid portrait and panorama pictures. However, it can be expected that the new model will not be able to hold its own. In terms of front cam, however, the P30 Lite is ahead: a 24-megapixel sensor with f / 2.0 aperture ensures high-quality selfies. The P40 Lite, on the other hand, manages with a 16-megapixel front camera, so selfie lovers will probably have to accept some losses.

Conclusion: Huawei P40 Lite vs. Huawei P30 Lite – the shine of youth

If you look at the two generations in a direct comparison, you will find little surprise. The current P40 Lite benefits from the topicality bonus and is therefore slightly ahead in most areas. However, this is also to be expected if you look at the speed at which technical advances are currently taking hold in the smartphone industry. The readjustments that Huawei forcibly makes on the P40 Lite are less spectacular than referring the P30 Lite to the old people’s home. However, one thing is certain: both the P40 Lite and the P30 Lite are excellent mid-range smartphones that do without some premium features, but deliver when it matters: performance, memory, battery, camera and price – it takes a long time here looking to find a better deal.
