Design and appearance

The dimensions of the Asus Zenfone 8 Flip differ by only a few millimeters from the Zenfone 7 Pro. The back cover is made of glass, the side frames are metal, and the pivot chamber is made of liquid metal, which allows it to be both strong and lightweight.

It is the camera that is the hallmark of the smartphone, allowing you to take selfies on the main sensor. The superbly implemented mechanism quickly rotates the lens module 180 degrees, you can even hear the pleasant sound of the movement of this structure.

The reliability of the mechanism has also increased – now it should be enough for 300 thousand turns (Zenfone 7 Pro had 200 thousand). The Zenfone 8 Flip’s camera is really cool, it’s unique, works well, and provides features that you won’t find on other smartphones.

But, the overall design of the device has remained almost unchanged, and it seems a little outdated – the Zenfone 6 Flip looks almost the same. The body of the new device is large, heavy and thick, especially when compared to the OnePlus 9 Pro , iPhone 12 or Samsung Galaxy S21 .

Smartphone display

The 6.67-inch AMOLED screen of the Asus Zenfone 8 Flip doesn’t have any cutouts or holes. They are not needed here, because the role of the front camera is played by the main one – the rotary one.

This display has a refresh rate of 90 Hz, a touch layer polling rate of 200 Hz, a brightness of 1000 nits and full coverage of DCI-P3 space. According to Asus, the bezels around the screen are smaller compared to the 7 Pro, but it’s hard to tell the difference by eye.

The aspect ratio is almost standard 20: 9, like many competing models. The resolution is Full HD +, and the screen itself is almost flat. Due to its large size and weight, the Zenfone 8 Flip is not very convenient for long gaming sessions or watching movies. The display is bright, there is no cutout for the front camera, but other flagships are much better suited for content consumption.

Zenfone 8 Flip Cameras

The Asus Zenfone 8 Flip has three camera lenses in the main module on the back.

The main one is Sony IMX686 with a resolution of 64-megapixel, f / 1.8 aperture, phase detection autofocus and 8K video recording. The second sensor is a 12MP ultra-wide-angle sensor (Sony IMX363) with autofocus. The latter lens shoots in 8MP resolution with 3x optical zoom.

The main sensor is nothing special, but when taking selfies it is second to none. You will have all the features available, including 8K video recording with electronic stabilization. Even the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra, with its tiny display on the back, is not as good at front shooting as the Zenfone 8 Flip. You will see yourself on a full 6.67-inch screen.

The application also helps here: you can set the camera at different angles, which will allow you to take unique shots. There is an automatic panorama mode in 8 Flip, in which the camera moves itself, as well as a tracking mode.

On the other hand, the image quality could have been better, here the Zenfone 8 Flip is almost indistinguishable from the Zenfone 8. The images look good, but the shades of the ultra wide angle lens are not the same as the main one. You should only choose a smartphone if you often take selfies or shoot yourself on video.

Software and performance

Works Asus Zenfone 8 Flip on Android 11 system with ZenUI 8 shell.

The interface is not much different from pure Android – there are practically no unnecessary applications and functions. The settings are simple, there is a Dark mode and a familiar notification panel. While not the most significant benefits, they make everyday smartphone use much easier.

The Asus Zenfone 8 Flip is also suitable for gaming, thanks to the incredibly powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor and a 20: 9 aspect ratio. The sound is good here too – not quite the same as the ROG Phone 5, but the sound is deep and powerful at any volume.

Autonomy Asus Zenfone 8 Flip

The Zenfone 8 Flip has a 5000 mAh battery, and in terms of autonomy, the new smartphone is clearly better than the Zenfone 8. You can easily have one battery charge for one and a half to two days, even if you play a lot.

Qualcomm Quick Charge 4.0 fast charging is also supported here, the kit includes a 30W charger from Asus – HyperCharge. No wireless charging.

There are two versions of the Asus Zenfone 8 Flip on sale – 8/128 GB and 8/256 GB, and prices start at about 130,000 rupees.

The design of the updated smartphone practically does not differ from last year’s model, so it seems outdated. The gadget has large dimensions and weight, although in some games this contributes to more convenient control. But, you will always feel the weight in your pocket – 230 grams.

Should you buy?

The Zenfone 8 Flip from Asus will definitely appeal to those looking for a high-quality front-facing camera. Here its role is played by the main rotary lens, although the overall quality of shooting is not the best – in this segment you can find better options.

In addition, the swivel module is not waterproof when the smartphone does not support wireless charging.
