Xiaomi Redmi Note 9S and Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro – comparison

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 9S was launched in the first quarter of 2020 and shortly afterwards the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro was introduced to the world. The appearance of both smartphones does not differ at all, like many other parameters in their specifications. However, the Redmi Note 9 Pro has several functions that can lead to a purchase despite the slightly higher price.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 9S and Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro – technical parameters

Contrary to the general trend of smartphone manufacturers to develop a “Pro” version of devices with much better parameters, there are not many differences between the Redmi Note 9S and Redmi Note 9 Pro . Both smartphones are equipped with the 6.67-inch IPS TFT display, the batteries with a capacity of 5020 mAh and even the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G processors, which are supported by the same RAM. Even so, the reviewers agree that the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro is more worthwhile to buy.

In order to describe the exact differences between the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9S and the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro, one must carefully examine the technical data:

•  The main advantage of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro, which can determine the daily comfort when using a smartphone, is the NFC module. Unfortunately, the Redmi Note 9S doesn’t come with it, so it can’t be used as a payment card.

•  Despite the same battery capacity, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro guarantees faster energy renewal with an output of up to 30 W.

•  The Note 9 Pro has a 64-megapixel main camera. The camera on the Redmi Note 9S has a 48 megapixel lens.

•  In addition to autofocus, the main camera of the Redmi Note 9 Pro also uses electronic image stabilization, which significantly improves the sharpness of photos. It also offers a wider variety of shooting modes, including macro, panoramic, and burst shooting.

Design comparison

The protruding main camera on the back of the former mid-range king Redmi Note 8 Pro, which is also at least subtly criticized, has at least not been revised by the manufacturer on the new Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro. Its four lenses are squeezed into a comparatively small square that clearly protrudes from the glass case. Why Xiaomi also dyes the LED flash underneath in black across the full width of the other lenses, but fits it flush into the housing, remains a secret of the company. At least, the quad camera looks more like a foreign body added later than if everything had been combined into one unit. Curious: this is not the case with the green color variant, we like it much better.

Sponge it, because apart from that there is no reason to criticize when it comes to design and quality. Regardless of the price called up, the Redmi Note 9 Pro shines like its predecessor with very good workmanship and chic design. The glass on the back is clearly curved on all sides so that the smartphone is comfortable to hold despite its size of 166 × 77 × 8.8 millimeters and the heavy weight of 209 grams. The most annoying thing here is the slipperiness, which is common to almost all glass smartphones. In addition, the back is very attractive for fingerprints.

The only small drawback: the frame of the smartphone is made of plastic, which doesn’t look as high-quality as aluminum. However, users will only notice this when they take the Redmi Note 9 Pro in their hands, because then the typical coolness that metal exudes is missing. However, you can’t tell by looking at the nature of the frame and considering the comparatively low retail price, plastic is still okay. Incidentally, on the right in the frame is the slightly recessed power button, which also serves as a fingerprint sensor.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 9S and Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro – conclusion

The advantage of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro over the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9S is primarily the access to the NFC communication. Some might also be tempted by the improved fast charging technology and better main camera with electronic image stabilization. The choice between the two smartphones therefore depends primarily on individual expectations. The price difference should also be taken into account. Although both models represent a low price range, the Redmi Note 9 Pro is around 50 EUR more expensive than the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9S.
