The Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro is an excellent smartphone for newcomers to the world of mobile phones and all those who do not want to or cannot pay huge sums for a good device. It convinces with an excellent battery life and charging time, a top performance and a good display.

The equipment is also impressive, but there are some gaps that lead to points being deducted in our test. The camera also only delivers beautiful images under good lighting conditions; otherwise details and image noise become blurred.

Advantages

  • Excellent battery life
  • Brisk performance in everyday life
  • Many plus points in the equipment

Disadvantage

  • Image quality in poor light from the free hand very poor
  • Strikingly high weight and thickness
  • No telephoto camera

Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro in the test: Top processing, but not lightweight

With the Redmi Note 9 Pro, the Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi wants to shake up the world of entry-level smartphones again. The first impression is promising: A chic and symmetrically designed back make the cell phone an eye-catcher – but only at first, because the pretty shiny blue disappears very quickly under fingerprints.

The aluminum frame of the device gives a high-quality feeling. The handling is a bit conspicuous, because with a weight of 209 grams, the Xiaomi is anything but light, and with around 11 millimeters at the thickest point it is also not exactly narrow. Both values are somewhat reminiscent of the giant flagship Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra. So you should make sure there is enough space in your pants or handbag.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro: giant display in the low-budget segment

On the front, the display covers over 80 percent of the area and measures an impressive 6.7 inches in diagonal. Thanks to the elongated 20: 9 aspect ratio, the cell phone can still be gripped reasonably well with one hand. At the top, the Xiaomi phone reaches a brightness of 453.5 cd / m².

This is fully sufficient for use in buildings or outside on cloudy days, but in bright ambient light you have to turn the display back and forth before you can read it again. Somewhat striking: The display loses its radiance around the hole in the center for the front camera. Especially with white screens, there is a gray-black veil around the selfie cam.

The resolution of the panel is inconspicuous, but no less good: With a Full HD Plus resolution (2,400 x 1,080 pixels), the smartphone achieves a pixel density of 395 ppi on a 6.7 inch screen diagonal. This is completely sufficient and does not give rise to problems due to insufficient sharpness.

The Xiaomi mobile phone also proves to be solid in terms of colors and contrasts: the IPS panel (LC display) covers the standard RGB color space (sRGB) to 116.6 percent, the DCI-P3 color space shows it 85 percent and thus clearly below average. The contrast value we measured is pleasantly strong at 148: 1. The color calibration agrees 99.4 percent with real colors – in the test, a white looks really white and has no noticeable blue tint or the like.

The battery monster to take away

A really big specialty is the built-in battery of the Xiaomi mobile phone. At 5,020 mAh, it is larger than average and again at the same level as the high-end Galaxy S20 Ultra mobile phone. We assume that the large battery should also play an essential role for the high weight of the Redmi Note 9 Pro.

According to the capacity, the Xiaomi lasted a whole 14:45 hours in our runtime test with 200 cd / m² display brightness in the LTE network. This is phenomenal and should also bring power users well over a day and a half. With economical use, even two days without an outlet are no problem.

But as long as it takes to use the battery empty, it is quickly full again. Xiaomi includes a 33 watt power pack in the packaging, which catapults the large battery from 0 to 100 percent charge in just 89 minutes. But even after 30 minutes, 46 percent are on the clock again – enough juice for a few more hours of use. However, the Redmi cannot be charged wirelessly.

Mid-range performance and an extra “G”

The mid-range processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G ensures the good performance of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro. This works with eight computing cores and has a clock speed of up to 2.1 gigahertz. He has six gigabytes of RAM at his side – not a matter of course in the entry-level class; smartphones often do not exceed four gigabytes here.

The “G” in the name of the SoC stands for gaming. Compared to the conventional Snapdragon 720, this chip comes with an increased graphics performance, which is particularly noticeable in games, since these usually make full use of the graphics unit of the processor.

But the cell phone also shows its best side in benchmarks: In the PCMark benchmark, the Redmi Note 9 Pro achieves an excellent result of 7,492 points for an entry-level cell phone. Our test PDF also loads it in just 4.7 seconds. The Note 9 Pro also convinced us in our practical test and shows neither dropouts no longer loading times for typical everyday tasks, such as surfing the Internet.
