Xiaomi Poco X3 Conclusion

The Xiaomi Poco X3 NFC leaves a good impression in our test and offers many features that are normally only found in the middle and upper class. The refresh rate of the display can be set to a soft 120 Hertz and an IP certification is also unusual for the entry-level class. The performance is fast and the battery life is excellent. And the X3 NFC also has all kinds of equipment features – one of them is already in the name. The price-performance ratio of the smartphone is great. There are only compromises with the camera.

Liquid 120 Hertz display

Excellent battery life

Great value for money

Bad picture quality under low light

Macro and bokeh cameras are more of a gimmick

A bit chunky, thick and heavy

Xiaomi Poco X3 NFC in the test: liquid like a flagship

With the Poco X3 NFC, the manufacturer Xiaomi is clearly targeting the lower price segment and is shaking up the entry-level smartphone market. Not least because of the strikingly designed back. The manufacturer impresses with some top features that are otherwise only found in high-end smartphones. Including the display, because it opens with a refresh rate of 120 Hertz. This means that it shows 120 individual images per second instead of the usual 60. In everyday life, this means: much smoother animations and a smoother operating experience.

The black edges around the display are pleasantly thin. At 6.7 inches diagonally, however, it is quite large, so it is usually no longer suitable for one-handed operation. Xiaomi relies on an LC display and has 2,400 x 1,080 pixels (Full HD Plus resolution). So it offers a decent sharpness for everyday use.

With a maximum brightness of up to 543.6 cd / m², image content can usually be read easily, but it can sometimes be demanding in bright ambient light. The color display is also okay, but due to the weaker color LC technology, it is at an entry level – you shouldn’t expect an OLED color firework. HDR content from Netflix and Co. cannot be viewed in its original form with this smartphone.

Xiaomi Poco X3 NFC: Big battery with big weight

With a capacity of 5,160 mAh, the Xiaomi Poco X3 NFC’s battery has decent power reserves, which, depending on use, can easily bring the smartphone over two days: Only after 14:22 hours in the endurance test is it over, that’s a very good thing good value. If you use the increased refresh rate, you still have 13:33 hours. The pronounced battery makes the smartphone a bit bulky: At 215 grams, it weighs a lot and the 11.7 millimeters thick is not so easy to hide.

With the Poco mobile phone, charging only works via cable – the wireless version is not built in, as is usual in this price segment. With 33 watts, the power pack pumps the large battery back full in a very quick 74 minutes. After just half an hour, more than 50 percent are charged again.

The performance of the Poco X3 NFC is just as fast as the loading time, because Xiaomi relies on the mid-range processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 732G. With a clock rate of up to 2.3 gigahertz and eight computing cores, the smartphone achieved a decent 8,330 points in the PCMark benchmark. Our complex test PDF loads it in just under 5 seconds. Together with six gigabytes of RAM, you are well equipped in terms of performance.

The light decreases, and so does the image quality

In a rather unusually designed camera module on the back, there are four lenses and an LED flash in a cross arrangement. Xiaomi relies on a main camera with 64 megapixels, which uses pixel binning technology to calculate the final results to 16 megapixels. The Poco also offers an ultra-wide-angle camera, a macro and a bokeh lens. The latter two will, however, be used rarely in typical everyday use. The manufacturer does without an optical image stabilizer.

Nice thing: The cheap Poco mobile phone also shoots videos with a maximum of 4K resolution at 30 frames per second. For smoother results, however, the switch to Full HD resolution with 60 FPS is also worthwhile, especially since the smartphone only has Full HD Plus anyway. In our test, however, image results are particularly important and the Poco masters them very confidently in daylight. Here it can even compete at flagship level in some cases. This is different, however, in poor ambient light: if the smartphone is stationary, the quality drops to a still acceptable level, while taking a snap with the free hand, the pictures are hardly usable. Our laboratory tester rated the general photo quality with an overall subjective grade of 2.7 (satisfactory).

Xiaomi Poco X3 NFC: Everything on board that you can expect

Android 10 with the in-house software interface MIUI 12 is already installed on the Poco X3 NFC ex works. Whether and when an update to Android 11 will be released is not clear at the time of the test. Nevertheless, in addition to the latest software, the Xiaomi also offers some features that provide plus points in the test.

So the smartphone not only has a USB-C port, but also a headphone jack that has almost been forgotten. It also offers space for either two SIM cards or one SIM and one micro SD card. With the latter you can expand the 128 gigabyte internal memory if you run out of space. The cell phone also offers NFC for mobile payment, as the name affix suggests.

In order to be able to unlock the smartphone biometrically, there is a fingerprint sensor in the frame, which also functions as a power button for the device. It reacts quickly and reliably in the test. On the other hand, the IP53 certification is very unusual, as smartphones in the lower price segment are not often officially certified against the ingress of dust and water. In the case of the Poco, however, there is proven protection against coarse dirt and light splash water.

To round off the overall package, the entry-level smartphone still offers good stereo speakers and a notification LED that is supposed to replace the always-on display. In terms of price, the Xiaomi Poco X3 Pro is priced at an RRP of 250 euros, with some retailers now selling it for 230 euros. A transparent protective cover made of silicone and an already applied screen protector are included in the scope of delivery.
