REALME GT Master Edition(RMX2202)

Realme ditched this year from releasing new devices for its flagship X series of smartphones, replacing it with a line called GT.

After the spring release of the firstborn with the same name Realme GT, the lineup at the end of summer was expanded with several more models. Including the curious smartphone Realme GT Master Edition – the owner of the prestigious iF Design Award 2021. This more affordable device also has many positive features, and in some ways even surpasses its older brother.

Material and appearance

The author of one of the design options for the realme GT Master Edition is Naoto Fukasawa, a famous Japanese designer whose work is popular all over the world. In the process of creating the gray version of the case, Naoto Fukasawa drew inspiration from suitcases, which are closely associated with travel and new emotions.

It is trimmed with vegan leather, and the desaturated gray is a neutral trendy color often found in the daily wear of trendsetters:

However, in the GT ME series, not all smartphones look like a suitcase: there is a version with the usual design in mother-of-pearl, for example. This option is more similar to the original realme GT, but in the details it is even more interesting. This is not a glossy back, but a matte one. The surface is not slippery, not easily soiled and not so bright, which means it looks more solid than the “shiny” flagship.

The side frame both there and there is plastic, made in the form of chrome-plated metal. But in realme GT it is flat at the ends, while in realme GT ME it is convex glossy on all four sides.

Another advantageous visual difference of the GT Master Edition is the transparent block with cameras. It is not a “black rectangle” that has set the teeth on edge, but a very light and elegant transparent protruding element with three camera lenses clearly visible against its light background. This makes the eyes of the cameras visually larger, more solid. In this regard, the GT Master Edition clearly outperforms its progenitors.

In terms of size, the smartphone is quite light, thin and not large. This is clearly not a shovel, although the screen size is approaching 6.5 inches. The bezel around the display is thin, and the “chin” is not wider than 4 mm.

The buttons are installed on both sides and are large enough to be easily found blindly. The stroke is soft, pliable. The only pity is that they are not located on one side.

Subscreen fingerprint scanner

It is not an ultrasonic sensor, but an optical sensor. It works more or less quickly and reliably, but, of course, not faster than the classic capacitive one. You still have to hold your finger a little, otherwise the unlocking will not work. But these are trifles.

Less like the fact that the pictogram highlights the place where you need to put your finger, not always, but only when you lift the device. That is, unlocking the smartphone lying on the table is already problematic.

At the end, a speaker, microphone, Type-C connector, 3.5 mm audio output are assembled. An additional microphone for the noise cancellation system is installed at the top. Unfortunately, there is no LED indicator for events.

The slot for two nanoSIM cards on the left side does not have a slot for memory cards. The smartphone works only with the memory that was given to it at birth – 128 or 256 GB of internal storage.

There are no stereo speakers in the smartphone. This is strange, because now the presence of stereo speakers is already becoming as common as AMOLED in the middle class. Nevertheless, the device sounds quite loud and clear. There is Real Sound technology here, but there is no Dolby Atmos support, as in the flagship.

Super Amoled Screen with refresh rate of 120 Hz

The display is definitely one of the strongest features of the new product. The screen has a Super AMOLED matrix with a diagonal of 6.43 inches and a resolution of 1080 × 2400. The physical dimensions are 67 × 149 mm, the aspect ratio is 20: 9, and the dot density is 409 ppi.

For the screen, a refresh rate of 120 Hz is supported, but it is better to enable adaptive mode, which itself chooses between 60 and 120 Hz, depending on the task. Of course, the smooth scrolling of the interface at an increased frequency is very noticeable, and this has a very positive effect on the perception of content on the smartphone screen.

The maximum brightness level in automatic mode according to our measurements is about 600 cd / m². The developers themselves claim a “peak value of 1000 nits”, but this is if the brightness of one diode is measured under ideal conditions with automatic adjustment. In any case, the screen is very bright and overall of good quality.

The display matrix has decent color rendering, digital coverage is 100% DCI-P3. Automatic brightness adjustment works adequately. The AMOLED matrix is characterized by high contrast, so the smartphone screen is comfortable to use even in bright light.

True, this display has PWM at low brightness levels, and the DC Dimming function reduces the flicker level, but does not completely remove it. This should be taken into account by especially sensitive people.

Cameras Realme GT Master Edition

The smartphone has three cameras on the back. To be honest, there could be two of them – the main one and the wide-angle (ultra-wide) one. But with the third – a simple camera for “macro photography” – obviously, according to the intention of the Chinese developers, the device looks more solid.

A simple two-megapixel module, of course, is useless, and it does not pull a true “macro”. It would be better to install a telephoto lens with optical zoom. But the main camera is decent here.

64 MP, f / 1.8, 25mm (main), 1/2 “, 0.7um, PDAF

8 MP, f / 2.3, 119˚, 16mm (ultrawide), 1 / 4.0 “, 1.12um

2 MP, f / 2.4, (macro)

The 64-megapixel main module with an f / 1.8 lens aperture shoots at 16 megapixels with a 4-in-1 pixel binning function, or you can take pictures in full 64 megapixel resolution. The process of selecting a mode is implemented as comfortably as possible.

However, the difference between the shots is minimal: on the close-up shots it is not noticeable at all, and on medium and long-range 16 megapixels, the mode is even preferable, because AI adds contrast during processing, making the picture more voluminous and spectacular.

In general, the camera produces bright and vivid pictures in daylight, but it does not fail in limited lighting conditions. But then you definitely need to apply the pixel blending mode. PDAF phase detection autofocus behaves adequately in all cases. But there is no optical stabilizer.

As for filters and additional effects, in addition to the already familiar color sets, the “Street” mode has appeared here for the first time. This is a specific set of filters that make the shooting as similar as possible to the shooting of professional street photographers. These include the Kodak film imitation and stylish black and white mode.

The wide-angle module is traditionally weaker in terms of detail than the main camera. And in this case, it also differs in color reproduction: the white balance slightly goes into the red spectrum, but this is noticeable only when the two images are compared directly. In general, the quality is lower, and such a module should only be used when it is necessary to fit more space into the frame.

Wide-angle moduleUltra wide-angle module

A separate module for macro photography with low characteristics does not produce any reasonable quality. And focusing on the magic for marketers “4-centimeter distance” to the object does not occur here. You need more distance, and it’s easier to take a decent shot with the main camera. The third module is here just for show. However, it may seem funny to someone to take such pictures.

The selfie camera has a high resolution of 32 megapixels (f / 2.5, Sony IMX615), and, indeed, produces excellent quality, both in terms of detail and sharpness, and in terms of accurate color reproduction without embellishment. Smoothly blurs the background, clearly cutting out the subject, without the slightest blots. All in all, this is perhaps one of the best selfie cameras at the moment, and it is worthy of any flagship tier.

The smartphone can shoot video in 4K (3840 × 2160) at 30 fps

Curiously, there is also a 60 fps icon, but it is inactive. It is clear that this is an artificial limitation, only to separate the Realme GT and Realme GT Master Edition in different price categories. After all, the first has the same camera as the second.

Calling the quality of video recording a flagship hand will not rise: the shooting does not reach the present top level. There is also a slight looseness in the details, and a slight twitching of the picture. You can turn on electronic stabilization, but it becomes available only when the resolution is downgraded to 1080p.

Sharpness is normal, but it is better to work with brightness manually: on the machine the camera gives overexposure. In general, the level is confident average, but nothing more.

Performance and software

In terms of hardware performance, there is a big difference between Realme GT and Realme GT Master Edition. And this is perhaps one of the key reasons for the much more affordable price of the second one. Against the flagship SoC Qualcomm Snapdragon 888, the less powerful platform of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7xx series plays here.

However, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G chipset itself, although not flagship, belongs to the type of processors that perfectly combine high performance and low power consumption. So, if you need to really use, not brag about gigahertz, then the Snapdragon 700 series processors are even better.

They have a lower level of throttling, and this is confirmed by tests. This means less heat dissipation, higher performance, more economical battery consumption. And such an assembly is cheaper for the buyer than the top-end filling.

Autonomy A 65W SuperDart Charge

The capacity of the built-in 4300 mAh dual battery is slightly less than that of the flagship with its 4500 mAh. But it suffices even more, due to a more economical hardware platform and low power consumption. For example, you can play games for up to 7 hours, and for watching videos on YouTube, the smartphone will be able to allocate as much as 18 hours (with a brightness of about 200 cd / m² and with an adaptive screen refresh rate). Autonomy, although not a record, is quite decent.

Verdict – Easier and cheaper

The difference between the standard realme GT and the GT Master Edition is quickly revealed upon first acquaintance with the device: the Master Edition feels like a completely different smartphone, despite the same body with a slightly redesigned design. Still, a different chipset is installed inside, there are no stereo speakers, Wi-Fi and built-in memory are slower, and the autonomy is worse. The latter circumstance makes these models completely different.

The realme GT Master Edition itself is well equipped and has a normal level of performance in its class; however the camera and battery life are worse than the competition. At the same time, as an advantage, it can be noted the presence of fast charging with a power of 65 W.
