Whether the iPhone 11 Pro, Galaxy S20 Ultra or even the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro: New top smartphones today often cost $ 1,000 and more. But can you get a top-class model for less than $500? The Realme X3 SuperZoom could be such a phone.

In this country is Realme still fairly unknown. No wonder, the company was only founded two years ago. But like Oppo , Vivo and OnePlus, it belongs to the Chinese electronics giant BBK Electronics. But the company from China is upgrading and is one of the fastest growing smartphone manufacturers in the world.

The first Realme mobile phones have also been available in Germany this year. In addition to the flagship, the Realme X50 Pro 5G , there is also the somewhat cheaper model: the X3 SuperZoom . And as the name suggests, the camera should play the main role.

REALME X3 SUPERZOOM: THE HARDWARE IN THE TEST

But let’s first take a look under the hood of the Realme X3 SuperZoom and see how much horsepower we’re actually traveling with. The smartphone currently costs around 470 euros and is powered by the Snapdragon 855+ – Qualcomm’s top processor. The CPU uses 12 GB of RAM. In addition, with the Realme X3 you get six cameras to hand – two at the front (wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle) and four at the rear (wide-angle, ultra-wide-angle, telephoto and macro lens).

What the Realme X3 SuperZoom lacks is the ability to expand the memory using a microSD card. However, since the data repository has 256 GB of space, this is not absolutely necessary. In addition, the device is not waterproof, has no jack connection and no 5G module on board.

The 6.6-inch full HD display also stands out. On the one hand, because it offers a refresh rate of 120 Hz. On the other hand, because it is not an OLED screen. So there is no always-on display. Since a notification LED is also missing, this is probably a knockout criterion for some smartphone users. Incoming notifications, however, are briefly shown on the display. The hardware ratings are detailed below.

  • Case: 4 out of 5 stars
  • Display: 4.5 out of 5 stars
  • Features: 3.5 out of 5 stars
  • Camera: 4.5 out of 5 stars
  • Software: 4.5 out of 5 stars
  • Battery: 3 out of 5 stars

→ Overall rating: 4 out of 5 stars

DESIGN

The Realme X3 SuperZoom is noticeably inconspicuous. At least from the front. Only the double camera punched out of the display is noticeable. It is a bit more pronounced at the edges. The on / off button integrated into the metal frame on the right-hand side is particularly striking. Not just because it is unusually large. Also because it houses a fingerprint sensor and, which is a disadvantage, is very sharp-edged.

CAMERA: REALME X3 SUPERZOOM

Anyone who includes the word superzoom in their model name has to be serious when it comes to the camera’s zoom. But before we get to that, first the good news: You can get good results with the normal wide-angle camera.

Even if a somewhat strange photo is taken from time to time (see gallery), on which, for example, straight lines make waves. The ultra-wide angle camera can also be used. Even if details are lost even with a minimal zoom in.

Now for the zoom. The two and five times zoom deliver decent results. With the 10x zoom, visible color noise is added in light-flooded rooms. Outside, when the sun is at its highest in late July, the results are slightly better. If you zoom in even further – up to 60 times! – but the photo quality decreases in inverse proportion.

At the end you get a muddy picture that you can confidently delete from memory. With the superzoom, Realme is entering the same world of marketing nonsense as Samsung does with the 100x spacezoom of the Galaxy S20 Ultra . A complete disappointment.

CONCLUSION

The Realme X3 runs without jerking, no wonder with this processor rocket and 12 GB of RAM. The light user interface also contributes to this. But do you really get a high-end smartphone for less than 500 euros with the Realme X3 SuperZoom at half the price of an iPhone 11 Pro , Galaxy S20 Ultra or Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro ?

Yes, but only in part. The Realme X3 SuperZoom delivers great performance due to its technical equipment. The display’s refresh rate of 120 Hz is also excellent. Unfortunately, it’s not an OLED screen. In addition, the smartphone is not waterproof and without a 5G module it is also not prepared for the future. In addition, the battery life is not exactly outstanding.
