With the 8 Pro, OnePlus is launching a new flagship that makes the big smartphone manufacturers nervous. Powerful, chic and equipped with premium features, it offers everything that the high-end cell phones from Samsung and Co. have to offer. But what can the model do that its predecessor cannot? OnePlus 8 Pro vs. OnePlus 7T Pro: the comparison.

OnePlus is China’s new star in the smartphone sky. The manufacturer convinces reliably with high-quality hardware, strong performance and premium features at a fair price. Therefore, the Chinese have earned the nickname price-performance king in the industry not only since last year’s flagship OnePlus 7T Pro. Our comparison with the previous year’s model shows whether the current device can meet these high expectations: OnePlus 8 Pro vs. OnePlus 7T Pro – What else is new ?

Display and design: punch-hole vs. Pop-up

The two OnePlus flagships could hardly be more visually different, but technically the differences are limited. The current OnePlus premium model comes with a 6.78-inch AMOLED screen, which has a resolution of 3,168 x 1,440 pixels at 513 ppi. The previous year’s cell phone is a bit smaller, but apart from that it is set up similarly: a 6.67-inch AMOLED display and a resolution of 3,120 x 1,440 pixels at 516 ppi are responsible for the high-contrast and colorful viewing pleasure that OnePlus regularly delivers. So far, so unspectacular.

But two details show that behind the OnePlus 8 Pro and the OnePlus 7T Pro are two different smartphone approaches that ensure that both devices stand out from the sea on premium mobile phones: the refresh rate on the one hand and the pop-up Cam on the other hand.

If the OnePlus 8 Pro guarantees the borderless viewing experience with the curved display and the trendy punch-hole notch for the 16-megapixel front camera, the 7T Pro uses a striking pop-up device to house the selfie camera and take full advantage of the screen. The extendable 16-megapixel camera not only works flawlessly and takes impressive photos, but is also an eye-catcher in any case. The 8 Pro cannot keep up with this extravagant solution, but it does with a 120 Hz refresh rate, which ensures an unusually smooth display. Here, the 7T Pro with the 90 Hz refresh rate is at a disadvantage, even if it is without question in the upper league with this value.

Battery and power: pure power with 5G bonus

Both smartphones cannot be fooled in terms of performance. OnePlus installs the current Octacore Superchip, the Snapdragon 865, in 8 Pro Qualcomms, which clocks at up to 2.84 GHz and uses a total of 8 or 12 GB of RAM. Inside the 7T clocks with eight cores and a frequency of up to 2.96 GHz but Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 Plus, which works with 8 GB RAM. The chip is one of the most powerful on the market and has taken the benchmark lists by storm. Which device is ahead in the field test in terms of performance and speed remains an exciting question. Performance or not, the OnePlus 8 Pro has one major advantage in itself: The high-end cell phone is 5G-compatible and therefore equipped for the future.

The current flagship from OnePlus should also be a step ahead of its predecessor in terms of endurance. Finally, the Chinese newcomer installs a giant 4,510 mAh battery in the 8 Pro, while the 7T Pro model is equipped with a 4,085 mAh battery. Both are certainly suitable for marathons and last up to two days, even if the new flagship phone is probably starting a few hours longer.

Camera: clear victory for the OnePlus 8 Pro

In terms of camera equipment, OnePlus has upgraded the most and equipped the 2020 flagship with a quad cam that plays in the top smartphone class. This is ensured by the 48-megapixel main sensor with f / 1.78 aperture, the 48-megapixel ultra-wide angle sensor with f / 2.2 aperture, the 8-megapixel telesensor with f / 2.4 aperture and the 5-megapixel color filter sensor with f / 2.4 aperture. Also on board: a triple hybrid zoom, video recordings in 4k and clever AI software, which in combination with the technical equipment takes high-quality photos in any situation.

The predecessor’s flagship will not be able to keep up here completely, even if it has a decent camera setup to offer. The triple cam of the 7T Pro has a 48 megapixel RGB sensor with f / 1.6 aperture, an 8 megapixel telesensor with f / 2.4 aperture and a 16 megapixel wide-angle sensor with f / 2.2 aperture. There is also a triple optical zoom, an image stabilizer and video recordings in 4k. The photo performance of the 7T Pro has more than proven itself in practice, since the mobile phone takes excellent pictures. However, it is unlikely that it can keep up with the current flagship.

Conclusion: OnePlus 8 Pro vs. OnePlus 7T Pro – moderately improved

With the 8 Pro, OnePlus has launched a flagship that is a bit ahead of its predecessor in most relevant categories. Whether it’s the size of the display and the refresh rate, whether it’s a battery or a camera: everywhere, the new model performs a little better, at least on paper. But there is no revolution, since the improvements are rather moderate and correspond to the usual practice when introducing new smartphone generations. Only one point clearly separates the two OnePlus flagships from each other: this is the 5G modem. Because the OnePlus 8 Pro is equipped with the new mobile radio technology and is therefore future-proof.
