“Built for speed”, “lose yourself in the large display”, “a camera to capture everything”. With these announcements HMD Global advertises its sophisticated entry-level smartphone Nokia 5.3. But do the statements really correspond to reality? We did the test.
With the Nokia 5.3, HMD Global launched an upper entry-level smartphone on the market in May 2020. The cell phone is offered for an introductory price of 38,000 pkr. A smartphone for everyone. But can a comparatively cheap mobile phone really meet the expectations of buyers?
NOKIA 5.3: HANDS-ON
A great cell phone for little money. The Nokia 5.3 is not a particularly small smartphone due to its 6.55 inch (16.64 cm) display. The frames and bars surrounding the display also underline the impression. Especially at the lower end of the display, the stripe is so thick that even the word “Nokia” fits there without any problems.
At the same time, the cell phone is pleasantly light. In addition, the smartphone looks comparatively high-quality when viewed from the front. A scratch-resistant composite is used on the back. It doesn’t look cheap, but it can’t compete with a metal or glass back. Practical suitability takes priority over optics, because it looks more robust than many a glass back.
Latest TECHNOLOGY IS IN THE NOKIA 5.3
Apart from the optics, the Nokia 5.3 can, as already mentioned, score with a 6.55 inch display. The resolution is 720 x 1,600 pixels, HD quality, so the pixel density is only 268 ppi. The Nokia smartphone cannot keep up with the best in its price range.
Meanwhile, Qualcomm’s mid-range Snapdragon 665 chip from 2019, which is supported by 3, 4 or 6 GB of RAM, is under the hood . This test was carried out with the 4 GB variant. This means that the smartphone runs pretty smoothly in everyday life, even though powerful games went beyond the hardware framework in the test.
Now to the connectivity: Here the user only expects the standard package, but it is complete and thus covers all the necessary transmission technology. There is a USB Type-C input , Bluetooth 4.2 , NFC and GPS . There is also category 4 LTE . This means that the Nokia 5.3 can transmit at a speed of up to 150 Mbit / s downstream and 50 Mbit / s upstream.
When it comes to WLAN, however, HMD Global uses the 802.11 b / g / n / ac standards. On the other hand, you are looking for the latest 802.11 ax (Wi-Fi 6) standard as well as 5Gin vain. However, these are currently still absolute high-end features – the Nokia 5.3 pursues this claim and does not have to for the price.
Nokia 5.3 camera review
The camera on the Nokia 5.3 is well suited for quick snapshots. This is already indicated by the technical data. There are a total of four camera modules on the back. The standard lens offers a resolution of 13 megapixels and an aperture of f / 1.8.
There is also a 5-megapixel ultra-wide-angle sensor (f / 2.4), a 2-megapixel macro sensor (f / 2.4) and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. Meanwhile, the front camera triggers with 8 megapixels (f / 2.0), records are not broken in the times of 108 megapixel cell phone cameras. The same applies to the simple camera software, which is very easy to use, but lacks an adjustable Pro mode
NOKIA 5.3 IN THE TEST – CONCLUSION
Each user has their own preferences and needs. Why should you spend 1,000 euros on a cell phone if you only use it to make calls, send WhatsApp messages and occasionally take a few photos? In this case, the Nokia is a good option. In addition, the device offers pretty much everything that a modern mobile phone should have – from a fast processor to a large display to a reasonable battery, the most important functions are neat. The camera is also useful.
