Design and display: modern meets retro look

In terms of design, the iPhone 12 Pro Max, like its siblings of the same generation, is all about the iPhone 5: Round corners, but an overall angular look. The classic Apple notch is also back. It interrupts the display at the top of the screen and houses the front camera there. The HUAWEI P40 Pro Plus, on the other hand, goes other ways and presents itself with rounded edges and corners. The camera notch is located in the upper left corner and takes up just as much space as necessary.

Despite the different appearance, the two smartphone displays meet technically at eye level. At 6.7 inches, the iPhone 12 Pro Max is slightly larger than the HUAWEI P40 Pro Plus, which has a 6.58-inch screen diagonal. However, both screens use OLED technology and resolve in Full HD Plus. The iPhone (2,778 x 1,284 pixels) can score here with a slightly higher resolution (HUAWEI: 2,640 x 1,200 pixels), which is probably due to the larger display, among other things.

Power: Two power chips fight for victory

The manufacturers of the two smartphones have invested a lot of love in the chips and built in powerful processors that are second to none. The HUAWEI P40 Pro Plus trumps with the in-house Kirin 990 5G, which has eight cores and runs at a clock frequency of up to 2.86 GHz. But the iPhone 12 Pro Max doesn’t have to hide either, because the new high-performance chip from Apple works at the heart of the smartphone: the A14 Bionic. Although it only consists of six cores, it clocks at a speed of up to 3.1 GHz. In addition, both cell phones are equipped with a 5G modem so that you can surf the Internet quickly and make use of the new cellular standard even when you are on the move.

In terms of RAM, however, Apple should do its homework again. The iPhone 12 Pro Max offers 6 GB of RAM, while the HUAWEI P40 Pro Plus has 8 GB. As a result, the Apple mobile phone should reach its limits more quickly when it comes to demanding apps and multitasking – but the difference should only be slightly noticeable in everyday life.

Camera: triple camera vs. Fivefold camera

HUAWEI has long been considered the undefeated winner when it comes to cell phone cameras – and the P40 Pro Plus can secure this title again in comparison with the iPhone 12 Pro Max. Although Apple equips its new premium model with a triple cam, which is actually a quad cam and takes impressive photos with 12 MP + 12 MP + 12 MP + depth sensor, the five-fold camera of the P40 Pro Plus represents the Apple mobile phone in the shadows. With a resolution of 50 MP + 40 MP + 8 MP + 8 MP + 3D depth sensor, the lenses developed by Leica depict every motif in great detail, with good contrasts and first-class colors.

The front camera in the HUAWEI P40 Pro Plus consists of two lenses that snap selfies with 32 megapixels and a depth sensor. In contrast, the iPhone 12 Pro Max has a mono camera with a resolution of 12 megapixels.

Battery and storage: The Apple battery has blossomed

The HUAWEI smartphone is only available with an internal storage capacity of 512 GB. However, it can be upgraded by up to 256 GB using an NM card, a proprietary HUAWEI technology. Apple, on the other hand, remains true to itself and does not build in any option to retrofit the iPhone 12 Pro Max if storage space is tight. However, the premium mobile phone is available in three different versions and you can choose between 128 GB, 256 GB or 512 GB ROM.

Apple is not necessarily known for long-lasting batteries, but the new Pro-Max model has an energy storage device that is well worth seeing and has a capacity of around 3,687 mAh. This means that the smartphone from Cupertino should last longer than Pro-Max colleagues from previous generations. A 4,200 mAh battery is built into the P40 Pro Plus, which also lasts around one to one and a half days with normal use.

Conclusion: Premium across the board

Apple is taking on its rival HUAWEI with the 12th generation of iPhone and shows that the manufacturer still has a knack for good performance. Only with regard to the camera, the iPhone 12 Pro Max cannot keep up with the HUAWEI P40 Pro Plus. Apple fans still cannot expand the memory, but if you choose the largest version of the iPhone for a surcharge, you will only encounter space problems in exceptional cases. The processor performance, the display and even the battery are similar in the Apple and HUAWEI smartphones.
