The Tecno Phantom X smartphone received a MediaTek Helio G95 processor and a screen with a refresh rate of 90 Hz. Super AMOLED-panel here with a diagonal of 6.7 inches, and the main camera shoots in 50-megapixel resolution. Other features include 33W fast charging, telephoto optical zoom, and 4K video shooting. According to the characteristics on paper, everything looks good, but how in practice?
Tecno is one of the brands used by the Chinese smartphone manufacturer Transsion in overseas markets. Tecno’s Phantom line of smartphones has become the flagship, so the new Phantom X has little in common with the previous Tecno Phantom 9. However, the new model can be called the flagship conditionally – in terms of its capabilities, this is the average level of devices from Xiaomi or Realme, although the gadget costs about 40 thousand rupees.

Unpacking and packaging

- Protective case
- Wired headset
- USB-A to USB-C cable
- Charging unit 33 W
- SIM tray tool and documentation.
Design and appearance
Tecno did not skimp on design and quality of materials when assembling the Phantom X, trying to stand out among the abundance of identical smartphones.
The back cover is rounded at the sides and has the texture of vertical stripes. The coating itself is most likely Gorilla Glass 5, although there is no official information on this. There are almost no imprints and smudges on the rear panel, although it slips a little in the hands.
The module with cameras, which consists of two levels, also looks unusual, and the upper one protrudes quite significantly. The case itself is relatively thick – 8.7 mm, so it is not always convenient to hide the device in a pocket. There are three main cameras, next to it there is a large LED flash and a laser autofocus sensor.
The front of the Tecno Phantom X is occupied by a screen, rounded on the sides. There are frames even on the side, but they do not seem large. But the hole for the two front cameras in the form of an “oval” immediately catches the eye. The distance between the sensors is large when the cutout itself is not close to the upper left corner.
The body colors look great: there is a choice of blue, with the interesting name “Starry Sky of Van Gogh”, and orange-blue – “Monet’s Summer”. Both attract attention with a pleasant gradient when the color scheme is chosen very well.
The frame is made of anodized aluminum. On the right are the volume and power keys, which are easy to reach with your finger. Above you will find a slot for two SIM cards and microSD, below is a USB-C port, speaker and 3.5mm headphone jack.
For its price, the Tecno Phantom X has an impressive display. It is a rounded 6.7-inch Super AMOLED panel with a 90Hz refresh rate, a resolution of 2340 × 1080 pixels and an aspect ratio of 19.5: 9.
The problem with this display is the low brightness – in manual mode it reaches a good 405 nits, however, there is no automatic adjustment. The maximum brightness may not be enough for you when using it outdoors on a sunny day. The accuracy of the shades is also inaccurate, there is a noticeable bias towards blues.
Changing the refresh rate is not implemented in the best way. By default, switching between 60 Hz and 90 Hz is automatic, but the 60 Hz mode is active too often. When watching Netflix and YouTube, everything works as it should, although for some reason 90 Hz is not available when surfing the web in Chrome.
At least the high refresh rate is constant across the interface, however, it doesn’t drop when you stop interacting with the screen. The problem is easily solved because the 90Hz mode is available in all applications. It’s up to you if you want to save some energy or if you prefer to have smooth animations everywhere.
Phantom X cameras
The main advantage of the Tecno Phantom X is the 50MP main camera. This is the Samsung S5KGN1 lens, which is installed, for example, in the more expensive Vivo X60 Pro +.
It is assisted by a separate sensor for laser autofocus, a 13MP telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom and an 8MP ultra-wide angle lens with a 120-degree viewing angle. In front there is a system of two sensors: the main 48-MP and wide-angle 8-MP. Unfortunately, the latter has a viewing angle of 105 degrees, and it is difficult to call the obtained photos wide-angle.
When shooting, AI (artificial intelligence) works, which cannot be turned off. It adds its settings when it recognizes a certain scene environment. There is no manual mode here either, which will disappoint those who want to have full control over the parameters.
Despite the high resolution of 50MP, the photo quality from the main camera is disappointing. Although the detail in the images is high, the dynamic range is wide, the frames are often overexposed, with blurred areas. Subdued shades look worst, which makes photos look pale. Results at full resolution 50MP provide only slightly more detail, although HDR is not available in this mode.
The Phantom X telephoto lens pleasantly surprises: the shades are rich, the detail is high, and there is practically no noise. The 2x optical zoom allows you to get good photos of distant objects.
The ultra wide-angle camera also suffers from main problems. Colors are a bit pale, dynamic range is narrow, when blur is noticeable even on close objects. And this is in daylight – indoors or in the evening, the situation becomes even worse.
The Tecno Phantom X does not have a macro lens, its role is played by a wide-angle sensor. Because it supports autofocus and shoots in 8MP resolution, close-up shots are much better than competitive 2MP or 5MP macro cameras. Although there are problems with pale shades.
But the Night mode pleases. The quality in dark conditions is not inferior even to the flagship models – the colors are balanced, the detail is high, there is no blur.
The 48MP front camera takes good selfies. Your skin will look pale, but the resolution will remain high even in low light. On the other hand, the definition of object boundaries is not the best, and the blurring effect of the background looks unnatural.
Video shooting on the Phantom X takes place in maximum quality 4K / 30 fps, slow-motion mode 720p / 960 fps is available. Telephoto and ultra-wide cameras are limited to 1080p / 30 fps. Electronic stabilization is not available at 4K, so shooting in motion is not recommended. But at 1080p there is an excellent Ultra Steady mode that works on all three lenses.
On top of the Android 11 OS, Tecno Phantom X has its own shell of the company – HIOS 7.6. Apart from the icons and the app drawer, there are no big differences.
Alas, there are several unfortunate solutions. For example, the application drawer opens with a swipe up from the bottom of the screen, but you can’t close it with a reverse swipe – you need to press the Home button. Swiping down by default triggers the search – to open the notification panel, you need to go to settings.
The icons on the notification panel are strangely reminiscent of MIUI, however, the settings themselves look different. There is a section – Sound, where separate sliders of the volume of content, calls, alarms and notifications are available. Such a rich choice is not offered by most other skins or pure Android.
In the Display section, you can configure the always-on mode, select the refresh rate, or configure the Edge lighting for notifications. For some reason, there are no color profiles and a temperature slider, so you have to be content with what you have. Two interesting features of HIOS are Kids Mode and Ella Voice Assistant. The first limits the functionality of a smartphone when it is with a child. The second is that it should serve as a replacement for the Google Assistant, although not better.
Lock screen gestures are also available on the Phantom X. Swipes control the launch of options when letters drawn on the display launch different applications. There are also gestures “lift to wake up”, “press to wake up”.
Game Mode allows you to block notifications and incoming calls while playing games. You can even broadcast standard SMS or WhatsApp messages as a scrolling line at the top of the screen. This way you don’t have to open the notification panel or pause the game.
The Tecno Phantom X is powered by MediaTek Helio G95 processor released in 2020. The chipset is based on the 2019 Helio G90T – that is, it is made using a 12nm process technology.
There are eight cores: two productive ones with a clock frequency of 2.05 GHz (Cortex-A76) and six energy efficient ones with a frequency of 2.0 GHz (Cortex-A55). Responsible for the graphics chip Mali-G76 MC4. There is only one version of the Phantom X available for sale – 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage. There is a slot for a microSD card, although 256GB should be enough for most.
In terms of speed, the Tecno smartphone is inferior to most competitors based on Snapdragon 700 series processors or higher. In the GeekBench 5 benchmark test, the device scores 512/1670 points in single-core and multi-core modes. The OnePlus Nord CE 5G from the same price point is 641/1812.
Graphics test GFX Car Chase ES 3.1 (offscreen 1080p) produces – 20 fps. This is not a bad result relative to competitors at the same price, but it is quite average. All in all, in terms of performance, the Phantom X could have been better.
Battery autonomy and sound
The Tecno Phantom X has a battery capacity that is quite standard for the middle price segment – 4700 mAh. The battery provides 14.5 hours of surfing the web and 16.5 hours of watching videos.
There are no complaints about the charging speed – the 33 W adapter in half an hour restores 55% of the energy, when the entire process takes about an hour and a half.
Unlike the competition, the Phantom X does not have stereo speakers – it has a single downward-firing emitter. The volume is high, but the quality is not the best, there is not enough bass, and distortion is heard at maximum levels. However, this is a standard situation for the middle segment, however, the presence of a 3.5 mm jack pleases.
Tecno Phantom X alternatives and price
With the release of the Phantom X, Tecno was definitely trying to establish itself in the international market.
For a price of 40 thousand rupees, the smartphone has good characteristics, stylish design, colorful OLED screen and a good 50-megapixel camera. But, in the segment of 40 thousand rupees, there are a lot of competitors. Tecno will find it hard to compete with models from established companies like Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus and Realme. Although the Phantom X has a number of advantages, they are unlikely to be enough to compete with more established brands.
